Free Lensing | Alexandria Wedding Photographer

It was around 11:30am on Friday when my sister and I began loading the car up for a 7 hour drive, and mentally checking off what was needed for the Yost wedding in the NoVa/DC area. We went through the list multiple times to ensure we had EVERYTHING. I was seriously excited about this wedding as it was my first Virginia wedding, and I am really looking forward to marketing more there.

So let’s back up to several months ago. I knew I needed to line up a second shooter for this wedding, and the one I’d been looking into wasn’t going to work out, so I posted a message in one of the Virginia photography groups asking if anyone would be up for second shooting with me. I was honestly shocked at the amount of people interested in doing this, and had NO idea how I’d choose. They were each so incredibly talented, and I just really have a hard time with these things, so I put it off for a little bit to consider who I felt would be the best fit for me, my brand, and the experience. When it came down to it, I knew Meagan Abell of  Meagan Abell Photography would be the best suited one for this, and plus I was dying to finally meet this mastermind of photography for myself. I specifically remember at a meetup how everyone talked so fondly of her work, how incredible she is, that the work she produces is mind blowing. It’s no secret that I’ve wanted to dive into the more artsy side of photography, that I secretly wish I could do film instead of the natural look I provide, so I was really excited to see how she works, and more importantly, to get to know her as a person and not just a Facebook profile. The moment I knew we’d easily become BFFs was when she walked in, introduced herself with a big hug, and then hiked her skirt up as she jumped on the fireplace of the hotel lobby to hang the dress for me. Love. And then she said it… “Do you want to learn how to free lens this? I think it’d be awesome!” Little did she know, I’ve been researching free lensing for awhile now, but never could figure it out well. She’s a wizard, guys. Throughout the wedding day when things were a bit slow or I knew I had a moment to try this out, I’d do my attempt at this. The results are exactly what I’ve dreamed of producing, and I can’t wait to really start implementing this into my work. It takes just a regular photograph to an artistic and beautifully captured level, and gives something flat and potentially boring a different edge to it. Let me know what you think though! Enjoy!
