Molly goes to Harvard | Legally Blonde

It all started as a joke… We knew how to get Molly to bark on command by secretly holding her tennis ball just out of range from the eyes of most people, so it looked like she was having a conversation with you. The Talent Company was in need of a dog for their performance of Legally Blonde, so when my sister and her best friend came to my house, they pretended to put Molly through casting, and she did surprisingly well! Turns out, she got the part! Before I knew it, my dog was going to rehearsals and wearing bedazzled hot pink outfits, and strutting her little butt on stage!

What resonates with me is how funny life is. Molly is a westie, not a chihuahua, and she’s working with the girl that plays Elle, who happened to also play Annie several years back, and my sweet dog Oliver was also in that play as Sandy, yet he was a weird mix of doberman/collie/greyhound, so obviously not an ideal look for Sandy. We have had a running joke that Molly is the reincarnated Oliver since she has so many of his odd characteristics (not to mention that she was conceived within a week of his passing given her birthday) , so when she got cast as Bruiser with the same girl that starred with Oliver, a piece of my heart melted 🙂

This play was also special because it was Alexa’s last one with this company before she heads off to college herself. Our entire row upfront on the last day of their performance was a blubbering mess, and we all had given up on hiding it. And of course, as soon as Alexa and her best friend came out at the end to do curtain call, we all lost it, including them. So here we go! The most likely conversation had on stage when Molly ‘says her lines’: “Bruiser! Where’s Elle?!” Molly: “… That’s not my name.” “She doesn’t have an engagement outfit?!” Molly: “No.” “She’s totally freaking out?!” Molly: “I have no idea.” “She’s trapped in the Old Valley Mill?!” Molly: “Probs not.” “Oh, the Old Valley Mall?!” Molly: “If I say yes, do we get to go for a ride?”

Something that the cast does on the last performance of every play is sing Seasons of Love. A dear friend that performed with them had tragically passed away, so this is a tribute they do for him, and this time it was Alexa’s turn to let her voice be heard (and yes, I was totally multitasking this – recording on my awesome phone HAH, photographing, crying, etc.) and DANG did she let it!

So yes, we are a family full of artistic folks and dogs, and now another high school graduate that’s paving her way through UNC this fall! And yes, she is majoring in marketing ( #chpweddings hollaaaaa) and dramatic arts 🙂 It’s always hard to choose your passion over all things (and you end up spending 6 years in college getting random degrees that you’ll never use before realizing the path you need to be on), but I’m so happy she is following her dreams! Congrats, little sister! I’m so proud!!
