When you have a best friend, you stand up for them. You push them. You love them. You tell them exactly what they need to hear. Christina has been all of that for me and more. For awhile now, she’s been talking about the idea of getting engaged… I knew her favorite place of all time was Charleston, and we had a great little vacation planned for mid July, so I immediately called Zach (her man) up to have that best friend heart to heart.
“YOU HAVE TO PROPOSE WHILE WE ARE DOWN THERE.” I practically yelled in the phone….
“I’m working on it!” he laughed.
As time grew closer, I had not heard from him, and I was curious if this was going to happen…. but apparently Christina beat me to it. A week before we were set to be there, I was in the middle of a wedding when I get a text from her showcasing this STUNNING diamond ring they’d picked out! That’s when Zach and I got to talkin’… Because what do you do when she KNOWS it’s going to happen? You throw her off as much as possible!
Yes, you read that right. Zach has been finding the most random and most awkward times to propose to Christina with random objects, and had plans to continue doing this throughout Charleston, such as when he proposed to her with a soft taco at Taco Bell as mentioned above (and also while she was in the bathroom… because that’s true love right there). As soon as we’d gotten checked into our hotel there, he texted me asking for gum because he wanted to get down on one knee and bring the ring box out, then ask if she wanted a piece of gum as he opened the box. She could have killed us! After dinner, he also got down on one knee to propose with our Greek leftovers. Our plan to really throw her off as to when it’d for real happen seemed to be working because more and more I watched her just not believe it when he’d get on one knee 😉
On Friday, I told Zach I thought today was the day. It was our full day there, beautiful weather, and we wanted to be sure to hit up as many places as possible – places she loved. The plan we had made got shifted around a bit since apparently it’s wedding season (who woulda known?! #fail ), so we decided to visit the downtown area first before heading over to the college. We parked, and were immediately met with the sound of the hustle and bustle of hundreds upon hundreds of tourists wandering the streets. We tried the marketplace, but that lasted a whole five minutes before we gave up on that idea. Christina wanted to go to the Moon Pie store before we left though, and as we walked in, Zach pulled me aside and said, “We need to do this very soon because it’s hot, and I don’t want us sweating a lot.” I was ON it. “Christina, can we just go on to the college because it’s just so crowded at the moment around here, so perhaps we can have dinner back here tonight instead.” And thus began the unfolding of the real deal…. right after Zach proposed with a box of moon pies, of course!
When we got to the campus, I walked them through some poses as we made our way to the garden, and that’s when the magic started. I set up my other camera on a tripod to record while saying I just wanted to get a group shot of us at some point, and then came the code word… “Gah, my sister keeps blowing my phone up asking about how to spell aardvark!” I said. Christina then proceeds to tell me, which I had to laugh about. Right then, Zach pulls her in, she gives him a romantic kiss, and he gets down on one knee. “Is this for real?!” she said with tears in her eyes. He then gives her the cutest speech, pouring his heart out to her with funny little comparisons of their relationship that had her cracking up! It was absolutely perfect, and of course she said yes!
